Typographic systems are akin to what architects term shape grammars. Shape grammars are a specific class of production systems that generate geometric shapes. “All design is based on a structural system” and according to Elam, 2007,  there are eight major variations with an infinite number of permutations. These eight major are as follow: Axial, Radical, Dilatational, Random, Grid, Modular, Transitional, Bilateral.
