SUBMISSIONS

For the first exercise, we need to get a fundamental knowledge for the field painting. To get these sense, we are going to do a edit on landscape picture to several time (morning, noon, twilight, night).

Fig 2.1 Original landscape pic, Week1 (24/9/2024)

This picture is for my original reference. I will use Photoshop for editing.

Fig 2.2-5 Edited pictures, Week1 (26/9/2024)

As the time and the sun goes, I edited the shadows in these pictures. The backgrounds in here are mountains, so I added some white in here because the objects paled out by the air.

Fig 2.6-8 Working screen of landscape drawing, Week2 (6/10/2024)

In this exercise, students requires to draw exact the same colour with their reference image. Students cannot use any colour picker or colour adjustment. After some feedback session, Mr. Kannan advised me to remove figure 2.8 because it is too complicated to draw.

Fig 2.9-14 Final Sky Replacement, Week3 (13/10/2024)

From week1 progress, I adjust some highlights and shadows, and add two more timelines.

Fig 2.15-18 Rough composition progress, Week4 (14/10/2024)

In the composition ideation, I get the inspiration from my reference movie–"RRR". Keep the angles from reference scene and try to get the best shot.

In the feedback session, I realised that I have misunderstanding of the assignments brief. So I need to change the design direction a lot from here.

Fig 2.19 Value studies, Week5 (27/10/2024)

For the rough composition #2, I made four value studies. These composition shows different angles and lighting. From the feedback session, Mr. Kannan recommend me to proceed with composition number #3, which is the lower left in figure 2.19.

Fig 2.20-22 Rough composition and progress #2,
Week5-6 (27/10/2024-1/11/2024)

In this composition #2, I set the location in India, which is the exact same location as my reference movie. I couldn't make satisfied screen in these two attempts because I didn't fully understand the project brief. So I got many advice from Mr. Kannan to improve my design from here.

Fig 2.23 Working screen in Unreal Engine, Week6 (3/11/2024)

This is the first time for me to use Unreal Engine, and it took a lot of memories of my Mac and it keeps ragging while I editing this project. I will recommend other PC to use Unreal Instead of using Mac.
I downloaded some free asset to get base shape in here.

Fig 2.24 2.5D Matte, Week6 (3/11/2024)

In this 2.5D Matte, I could get knowledge about how to combine 3D screen with 2D drawing. I still had a lot of mistake in here, however, I could get a milestone to do the final project.

FINAL FUNDAMENTALS OF MATTE PAINTING

I put the perspective studies by myself in this final PDF.

INVISIBLE SET EXTENSION (Week4-16)

Fig 3.1 Invisible set extension proposal, Week4 (21/10/2024)

Fig 3.2-3 Reference image and attempt #1, Week8 (16/11/2024)

For the invisible set extension, I set the location in India, and the theme as the Indian city. In the original movie, protagonist rent Indian gods power to defeat the enemy. So I want to associate this setting with my story setting.

Fig 3.4 Attempt #2, Week9 (24/11/2024)

From Mr. Kannan's feedback,I added some elements to construct environments. However, the snake statues are too much in this screen. Mr. Kannan and I feel they are annoying in this screen, so I agree with remove these in the latest attempt.

Fig 3.5-7 Attempt #3, Week10-12 (1/12/2024-16/12/2024)

Refer to the original movie, the lighting in my composition is completely different. To get more close atmosphere as original, I changed the sky to more blue and light one. Mr. Kannan advised me to add more colours because my composition is lacking the colours. I was thinking that limit the colour number would make composition more united. However, the original footage is more colourful and blight, so I need to change the design direction in here.

Fig 3.8 Working screen in AfterEffects, Week11 (9/12/2024)

While editing the invisible set extension, I proceed the video footage in parallel. First try was failed because I didn't export my invisible set extension properly. In figure 3.8, we can see the gap between front image and background image. It is not correct form of editing the footage from one image. If you don't want to suffer, you should keep the foreground/midground/background layer clearly and make sure it can be export individually. I suffered from it a lot.

Fig 3.9-10 Working screen in AfterEffects, Week12 (14/12/2024)

After learned more proper way to make footage, I editing layers by layers in AfterEffects. We need to turn on the 3D mode and two screen mode to get these view. I set left screen as the final view, and right screen as the working view. It is so easy to see the path of camera and its angles.

Fig 4.1-2 Additional working screen, Week14 (27/12/2024)

After getting some feedback from Mr. Kannan, I started adding effects, colour adjustment, and camera movement. I made three footage to compare, and choose attempt #3 for the final.

FEEDBACK

Week1 (24/9/2024)
General Feedback... for first exercise, you should change the sky of landscape photo for morning, noon, and night

for exercise2, draw exactly same colour with no colour picker
this is the test for observation

Week2 (1/10/2024)
General Feedback... For the extended work, you need to refer a movie or CM for make your own cut. Your cut going to be a max three locations and several seconds. We are going to use AfterEffects and Unreal Engine for making our work. In exercise1, you should choose three location and draw the same thing with these references. No colour picking because it is for train observation skills. Learn deconstruct and construct. 16:9 Once apply colour, you can pick it. But not pick from original reference.
For the sky replacement, you need to do at least 7 timelines.

Week3 (8/10/2024)
General Feedback... Extract one shot from your favourite movie and explore that composition. It is just a reference. Just extract the informations from the scene. Write your script for the scene by using any tools. When you using Pureref, cmd+P and it will automatically set the moodboard. Make your composition into B&W and check the value of the colours.

Specific Feedback... The big contrast is missing and you must start from big colour. To bring viewers attention to proper directions, you should narrow the colour. Your theme is too complex, so just stop and replace it.

Week4 (15/10/2024)
General Feedback... Try the Unreal Engine. You can't use spaces, so when I save the file needs to be like "2024_DMP_kaho" or something.

Specific Feedback... Highlights are gone. Don't start with very detail. Use a high resolution one or you'll get a mess of noise and messed up colours. Perspective is done to the point where you have to measure and then draw it yourself.

Week5 (22/10/2024)
General Feedback... It would be nice to have a view from the main character's point of view. Draw a shot of the landscape in the film from a different location. If you want to depict the Taylors, you can take a general view from the rooftop, or another view of the same place. Focus on a place in the film. If you want to use cliffs, extract the colour palette, shapes, etc. as references. Find a reference that has a similar perspective and use it as a reference. Don't use a reference image with a steep slope. It will be easier to draw while checking the value with Grey scale. Draw from different angles, such as overhead view, view from the ground, etc. Draw arrows to make it easier to understand the direction.

Specific feedback... Do the proper reflection. Don't get references from many places, because geography changes a lot. You need to understand compositions and their extensions before you make them your own. Think of it as an extension of the scenery in an existing film.

Week6 (29/10/2024)
General Feedback... 1920 x 1080 is the minimum.

Specific Feedback... The ship is too big. Think about how it was expanded from where it was. Number your work well.

Week7 (5/11/2024)
Specific Feedback... Don't put something as a photo bashing that doesn't look like it belongs in the area. Try a different angle because it's too big and floats too much

Week9 (19/11/2024)
Specific Feedback... You need to add more extension to your work. Add Indian elements like snakes. Extension temples more.

Week10 (26/11/2024)
Specific Feedback..Get the materiality of the snake right. Look at the actual statue for reference. Colours are too monotonous in your work. Look at the colouring of the original film and adjust your colouring. Add a little more architecture in the background.

Week11 (3/12/2024)
Specific Feedback... Snakes are too much in the screen. Better to place them in the back than in the front. There are not enough colours, so more should be added.

Week12 (10/12/2024)
General Feedback... Press the bottom right button to change the angle of view.
Use active camera. You can move the screen by using alt. If you want to set camera details, you can add a camera to the timeline. If you add depths, you can blur distant objects.

Week13 (10/12/2024)
Specific Feedback... Please adjust and prepare a bit for 2.5D footage.

REFLECTIONS

In this semester, I feel I should take vehicle design instead of taking this module. It is because this module requires advanced knowledge for designing and constructing the backgrounds. Anyways, this module force me to level up and I could get precious experience in here. The knowledge of matte painting can be used in a lot of area. The virtual plein air is really helpful for me to study how nature colouring was blurring and how airs affects to the depth. The overall experience can be the milestone for next step.
