LECTURES

Why we need to learn Photoshop?
Understanding Photoshop is necessary if we operate in a visuals style, website design, or individual experience function.

Photograph manipulation
It involves the transformation or alteration of a photograph using various methods and techniques to achieve desired results.

What is Digital Imaging?
Digital Imaging converts the printed text, artwork, and photographs into digital images using a digital scanner or another imaging device.

Facial point
A key element to any good composition is a strong focal point, as it helps viewer’s eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of our design first.

Scale&Hierarchy
Scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements, thus signifying their importance to the communication.

Balance the elements
A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think of each elements as having a ‘weight’ to it.

White space
White space is mostly known as “empty space” to balance up the main focus of a composition.

How to use the Lasso Tool
The Lasso Tool allow us to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.

How to use the Pen Tool
When it comes to actually creating a path from scratch, the pen tool is the most common option.

What is Adjustment Layer?
A group of a super useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustments to your image without permanently changing its pixels.

Brightness/Contrast
Brightness and Contrast makes adjustment to the tonal range of our image.

Level
Levels modify the total values in an image by adjusting the levels of shadows, midtowns, and highlights.

Curves
Curves let you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of our image, and is the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in an image.

Exposure
Exposure lets us adjust exposure levels with three sliders: Exposure, Offset and Gamma.

Selective Color
The Selective Color adjustment layer selectively edifies the amounts of primary color without modifying the other primary colors in image.

What is filter?
Using filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe’s graphics editor.

The main parts of the camera:
1. Camera body:
・Shutter
・Image sensor
・LCD screen
2. Camera lens:
・Aperture/ Iris

Fig 1.1 Exposure setting

IRIS
Aperture/Iris is control the flow of light entering the lens. And also measured by f-stop, indicated by sequence of f-number: f/1, f/1.4, f/2... The lower the f-number, the larger the lens opening.

SHUTTER
The shutter is a small plastic sheet that opens and. closes to allow light onto the film or prevent light from reaching the film. The shutter speed is measured in seconds: 1/1000s, 1/500s, 1/250s...

ISO
Originally referred to the sensibility of film-it’s “light gathering” ability. For digital photography, ISO refers to the sensitivity-the signal gain-of the camera’s sensor. The common ISO camera settings are: 100, 200, 400... The lower the number of ISO the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain.

Focal length
The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and vice-versa. Focal length is the measurement (in millimeters) from the optical center of a camera lens to the camera’s sensor.

Depth of field
The proportion of the image that is reasonably sharp and in focus. The smaller the aperture you use, the greater the depth of field.

The principals of design are the rules a designer must follow to create an effective and attractive composition. The fundamental principals of design are: Emphasis, Balance and Alignment, Contrast, Repetition, Proportion, Movement and White Space.

CONTRAST
Contrast is what people mean when they say design “pops”. It comes away from the page and sticks in our memory.

REPETITION
If you limit yourself to two strong typefaces or three strong colors, you’ll soon find you’ll have to repeat some things. It is often said that repetition unifies and strengthens a design.

PROPORTION
Proportion is the visual size and weight of elements in a composition and how they relate to each other. It often helps to approach your design in sections, instead of as a whole.

MOVEMENT
Movement controlling the elements in a composition so that the eye is led to move from one to the next and the information is properly communicated to your audience.

WHITE SPACE
White space (or negative space) is the only one that specifically deals with what you don’t add. White space is exactly that-the empty page around the elements in your composition.

SUBMISSIONS
EXERCISE/Week1

Fig 3.1 Design1

First task is collect 3 images from Pinterest and explain why I like them.

Design1: Tokyo health club”ASA” (by Shun Sasaki)

Description: “ASA” is a Japanese word that means morning. This work shows the morning habit such as having breakfast and brushing teeth but on careful observation, the toast is coated with toothpaste, and the milk cup has a toothbrush. Their roles are reversed.

I saw it three times, and finally realized the heterogeneity of this work. “Look like a normal but there’s something wrong with it” is one of my favorite method of expression.

And the colors are mostly used red, white and blue. Narrowing down the color number makes this work more cohesive.

Fig 3.2 Design2

Design2: The opposite of design fails (by Bored Panda)

Description:This is the common map including the contour and a car icon commonly used to indicate people’s position on the map break through the map symbols. You can see nothing after the car has passed so it means disobey the map instructions.

The most interesting point is we mostly follow the map and move because it’s not easy to change the terrain. However this work breaks the common sense of “the map symbol cannot move” and this action brings a dynamism to the screen which is usually motionless.

Fig 3.3 Design3

Design3: Digital illustration (by yasuo-range)

Description:The light is coming from the left side and the shadow extends to the right. The glass in front of a banana is transparent yellow color. And the handle of the kettle is behind the wine bottle. We can understand the object's position, light source, shadow and spatial settings from perfectly flat patterns that completely separate colors. This is the most difficult point because if adjoining colors are too far away, it causes the lack of the identification of objects.

This is a picture that is composed of geometric patterns. The individual pattern has no meaning but seems to have daily necessities such as kettles and plants on the desk by lumping together.

PROJECT 1A: PHYSICAL COLLAGE/Week2

Fig 4.1,2 Collecting elements

First, we need to collect elements for this composition from old magazines, newspapers, and so on. I got a magazine and two weekly pamphlet from clinic. The lady holding a bouquet of rose is so fantastic and I want to make composition mainly use this lady.

Fig 4.3,4 Pre Composition#1,2

I made three pre-composition layouts and choose I for the best. Mr.Fauzi suggested us that people’s eye line attract viewers.

Fig 4.5 Pre Composition#3

I want viewers to focus the eye line so I placed the thing looks like eyes into the center part and make a line to lead to the lady. I place three circle (Yellow, Red, Green) on the right side and need to take a balance. And behind this composition, I need to compare the living things and non-living things. I only use the woman and flower and rest of them are blight, colorful but not living. I want to tell the beauty of living things. This layout is the best among the three.

Fig 4.6,7 Composition base

First, I made a base for my composition. It is important because the composition is making from the base. I failed for glueing and took it out once.

PROJECT 1A: DIGITAL COLLAGE/Week3

Fig 5.1-3 Pre-collage#1,2,3

In this composition, I made three layouts with limited elements.

Fig 5.4 Elements

I want to fully use this elements for this collage. Mr.Fauzi choose collage#2 for the best.

FINAL COLLAGE

Fig 5.5 Collage#2 JPEG (10/10/2023)

DESCRIPTION:

I want to make the depth in this composition. I put two roads beside the screen and put the golden ratio on the center to make the screen more narrow. It works successfully and I can attract viwer’s attention for center fish. But suddenly I feel that this screen is vertically wide so I put part of the machine on the lower side and beside. The composition needs to be more sensitive in the balance of the objects on the screen. If there is any difference in angle, size, and place, they cause strangeness and discomfort for the viewer. It takes so long to place them into a comfortable position and I learned the ratio is thoughtful and has a composition that attracts the viewer's attention. I will be conscious of these ratios to make my works more attractive.

PROJECT 1A: DIGITAL COLLAGE ADJUSTMENT/Week4

Fig 6.1 Adjustment layers

In week4, we need to use adjustment layers and filters into week3 composition.

FINAL COLLAGE

Fig 6.2 Final collage JPEG (17/10/2023)

DESCRIPTION:

I want to change the color into cold color that looks like it's under the sea. Firstly I put a green filter layer and set the shadow layer to dark blue, light layer to light green. And I use black color blush tool to the biggest fish that is placed in the center because it makes the fish's face more clear. I want viewers to focus on the center from outside to inside so I make the outside  is little bit hazy and the inside is clear.

I have to say one thing that is regrettable is I can’t use filter effects completely. So I need to improve my skills in stack layers to fully use their effects. I can’t change the brightness well this time. So I will check the tips of photoshop filter effects and make improvements of this composition.

PROJECT 1B: DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE1/Week5
Photo Manipulation (Hearst Mansion)

Fig 7.1,2 Shazam poster and Hearst Mansion

In this exercise, we need to separate Shazam from backgrounds and drag&drop to Hearst Mansion. We also need to recolor, add noise, shadow, and reflection.

Fig 7.3,4 Add shadow, working screen

I need to adjustment Shazam for fit in background. It is difficult because if the people too blight, it stand out in the screen and if it’s too dark, it become non-visible.

Fig 7.5 Part1: Shazam JPEG (24/10/2023)

Fig 7.6 Eye level self portrait

Next, I took a self portrait. Eye level refers to when the level of our camera is placed at the same height as the eyes of the characters in our frame.

FINAL REFLECTION

Fig 7.7 Part2: My reflection JPEG (24/10/2023)

I did the same things that I’ve done in first exercise. The shadow seems little bit darker but the reflect is good.

PROJECT 1B: DIGITAL IMAGING EXERCISE2/Week6

Recoloring Black & White

Exercise1: The B&W portrait

Fig 8.1 The B&W element

In this week, we recolor the B&W portrait. We mainly use blending mode: soft light or overlay for this coloring because the original color is too much.

Fig 8.2,3 Color process and Final portrait (31/10/2023)

I want to make soft impression for him so I use soft colors. Once I add shadow color, it stands out too much so I didn’t add.

Exercise2 Part1:Recoloring B&W photo- Advanced level

Fig 8.4-6 Two color sample and B&W portrait

In this exercise, we coloring B&W portrait with two color sample. The process of coloring is same as the Fig 6.2.

Fig 8.7 Layer mask and color

I made layer mask for each body parts. The blending mode is soft light.

Fig 8.8 Final portrait (31/10/2023)

Exercise2 Part2:Recoloring B&W photo- Advanced level

Fig 8.9 B&W portrait

In this exercise, we choose one portrait from portrait folder.

Fig 8.10,11 Coloring screen and color sample

The process of coloring is same as Fig 6.2, 6.5. Through this project, I like using soft color and keep balance of overall portrait. But the difficult in this project is exactly the balance of color. I failed few times and try to correct them all. However the skin shadow part is too much darker and the boundary between arm and leg is not visible clearly. It is my fail and I need to pay attention in overall balance.

REFLECTIONS

I didn’t use Adobe Photoshop before and I surprised the number of functions. I try my best for keep up the class and lecture but sometimes really hard for me to remember the shortcut key and process of exercise. The most difficult part in project1A/1B is adjustment layer and recoloring. Photoshop color blending mode has huge amounts of selection and I’m stuck for 30 minutes to understand the functions. At the same time, it is so fun in learning new skills and fully use them to make more better works. This project certainly develop my skills in Photoshop.
