EXERSICE/Week1

Fig 1.1 stroke practice

In the first week we are practice pen tool and this skill is so important for using adobe illustrator.Click and move the point is make a line. Make a line, hold and move the point is make a line of arc.We make a car with these basic skills.

VORMATOR SHAPES/Week2

Fig 2.1 Reference from Pokemon

For making creature design, my reference is came from Pokemon. I like their shapes so much and I made my design related to this Pokemon, “Kyurem Black”. His curve shapes and straight line are keeping great balance and I thought I could learn character structure from him.

In the second week we are practice the pen tool and make a character. We given 8shapes and prohibitions in this practice are deformation of shape. I made a dinosaur and mainly use the badge shape to make joints. The most difficult part is keep appropriate balance of character. If its part of the body is too much bigger or smaller, it makes uncomfortable to viewer. Also the color balance is significant. I unified the basic colors into cold color and decide the eye color to red because I want compare eye and body color. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any progress for this practice because of Adobe install problem happened to me.

LIGHT AND SHADOWS/Week3

Fig 3.1, 2 Example for Chiaroscuro Exercises

Fig 3.3,4 pear progress

First we made pear shape and its shadow in same layer and using cutter tool for outline anchor points. It makes new line on the shapes and they can move separately.

Fig 3.5 Slice pear

Using Fig 3.5 technique, we can make sliced surface in screen. We need to add shadow individually related to their upper shape. In personal opinion, this part is really fun for me because it makes depth in the two-dimensional screen and the thing looks more three-dimensional.

Fig 3.6 Edit pear texture

I use Japanese pear (Asian pear) texture into this layout. Also I changed shadow color using color changer in Adobe Illustrator. I pay attention to the texture is looks like randomly but not messy. Using Fig 3.5 technique, I made more unevenness slice surface for this. I put a seed to express the inside of Japanese pear.

Fig 3.7 Skull shadow

I also take skull outline and put it in pear as a shadow.

Fig 3.9 Add shadow to Week2 creature JPEG (15/10/2023)

In the third week assignment, we are practice using the Adobe Illustrator tools and add shadow to our Week2 creature. I want to make depth in this layout but it was still flat and seems not working. I’ve wondering the reason why it was not working. The outline in individual parts are too clear and we cannot find where is the front part and behind part.

By the way I forgot to save Week2 Ai file so it is hard to add new shadow. We should never forget to save working file because it makes more complex procedures to fix it.

COLORS AND BLENDING MODE/Week4

Fig 4.1 The example for practice colors and blending mode

Fig 4.2 Final Practice colors and blending mode JPEG(18/10/2023)

In the 4th week we are practice colors and blending mode. Firstly we take shapes of Fig4.1 man standing at right as we were done in Week3 pear and skull practice. We need to add textures for this man so I choose base three texture that is waving, contrast in color, and sea surface.

VORMATOR CHALLENGE/Week5

Fig 5.1 Background and creature

In the 5th week we do an exercises that using the week2-3 creature. Also I searching for making texture of rocks and pay attention to how the shadows naturally see in this screen. The most difficult part in this layout is the lights and shadow position. I set a light direction from right to left because the rock disturb the visibility of shadow. But I made the creature light point from front to back, so it is not completely match with this light and shadow rules. This part took me a lot of time to deal with this strangeness.

Fig 5.2 Final Pokemon card JPEG (25/10/2023)

I named him “Dinostar” because the creature models are dinosaurs and the most iconic part in backgrounds is star. Personally I love Pokemon, so I’m making this card details with joy.

REFRECTIONS

In this exercises, I learned skills in Adobe Illustrator. We only allowed to make illustration with lines and curves. It is really hard when we try to visualize our ideas. The way of expression is limited by its shape but at the same time, it is really fun when I thinking how to make a shape that I want with little ingenuity. In Week2 challenge, I was conscious of Pokemon characters shape. Pokemon is using curves well in their design and I’m also try to compose curves in my design but didn’t work well. Too much curves are little bit boring because they have flat strength. I noticed that simple design are not just simple but well-considered. I especially love cartoon characters design and its shape. In next work, I will pay attention in making simple design structure.
