Introduction: Elements & Principles of Design

Ms. Jinchi describes how design are using in our daily life and the concept of design elements working in design. We need to learn about elements and design principles to achieve effective communication throughout design.

Fig 1.1 Principles & Elements of Design

・Hierarchy
Emphasize several characters of design by using color, size, contrast, etc.

・Alignment
It is the placement of visual elements line up in the composition.

・Rules of third
It is the way to look at layout of a design. Overlay a simple grid which divides into thirds, both vertically and horizontally on the design.

In these pre-recorded videos, Ms. Jinchi explain to us about the basic knowledge of design principles and how it works in design. The last video is for how to make blog in blogger.

INSTRUCTIONS AND RESEARCH

1. Include this MIB.

Fig 2.1 Instruction for this task, PDF (page6)

2. Recap the design principles listed below:

Fig 2.2 Example of Gestalt theory
• Gestalt theory
In Gestalt theory, informations are provide as whole rather than individual parts. The attributes of the whole are not deducible from analysis of the isolate parts.

Fig 2.3 Example of Contrast
• Contrast
It occurs when composition which includes two or more visual elements having a noticeable difference.

Fig 2.4 Example of Emphasis
• Emphasis
Adding emphasis to object means to make a focal point which viewers may concentrate first. It has a power to grab viewer’s attention but doesn’t overpower the rest of design.

Fig 2.5 Example of Balance
• Balance
Balance in design covers how objects weighted against in each other on different sides to make satisfaction, cohesiveness, and completion. Also it needs perfect balance in vertically, horizontally, diagonally and background versus foreground.

Fig 2.6 Example of Repetition
• Repetition
Reusing the elements- colors, sharps, fonts, textures and etc throughout a piece of work.

Fig 2.7 Example of Movement
• Movement
It refers to the travel of eye movement. The important elements need to lead viewer’s eye move to next element.

Fig 2.8 Example of Harmony & Unity
• Harmony & Unity
These two refer to how well all the different visual elements work together.

Fig 2.9 Example of Symbol
• Symbol
It can be used to communicate its story, represent one of the identity and convey one’s thought to others. The figure above showing the abstract symbols which can be represent but less details than pictorial symbols. Pictorial symbols are more related to image.

• Word and Image
Image can illustrate words in visual representation while words can describe things in detail. They create a more complete and immersive experience for viewers.

3. Pick and briefly describe one goal from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).

I choose UNSDG number 14: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, sea and marine resources for sustainable development” for this task. It aims to protect and ensure the sustainable use of sea and marine resources. It also includes stop overfishing, reduce ocean pollution, and conserve ocean and coastal ecosystem.

4. Select an existing art/design work that revolves around that goal of your choice. Beneath the image, include the credit line of the art/design work (title of art/design work, artist’s/designer’s name, year, size, medium, source link). Some works may not have all these but provide as complete as possible.

Description by creator:
Stop plastic pollution. Eco concept vector illustration. Ecology poster set with garbage and ocean life.

5. Explain, in about 100-150 words, why you chose that design in relation to the UNSDG goal and list the design principles you observed in that design.

I choose this series of work for goal 14 because they have quite clear visual for describe how plastic pollution is danger for ocean environment. These three posters show the shape of fish combined with trash. This is really good, simplified work that can easily convey the idea “Stop plastic pollution because it is harmful for fish” to viewers. Also they mainly using cold color in their backgrounds and water expressions. The warm color (dull pink) in plastic section accentuate the object because this is the most important in this work. In my guess, the dull pink is express the violence for fish. We can understand the concept that plastic pollution may kill the fish in the ocean from this expression. (121 words)

WORK PROGRESS: Discuss and show your progress to your lecturer during class.

LEARNING GOALS:

1. To explore and observe the various design principles.
2. To identify an existing design with relevance to design principles and
the chosen goal.

FEEDBACK

Week2 (14/2/2024)
General Feedback... Bring pencil for check your attendance. Recap the principles in your own words and make sure if you get your knowledge from online or website, just put link for your reference. Do not select artwork that is too abstract.

Specific Feedback... No need to put “Submission” part in this blog because it is research. Put some images and figure number to clear understanding. You need to explain why you choose this work for your selected goal but you just write about how it works as a design.

Week3 (21/2/2024)
General Feedback... We need to write the source for our images. We shouldn’t use the lecturer’s slide because it is just a copy & paste. To get the knowledge properly, we need to be responsible for informations.

REFLECTIONS

This task is for introduction of blog and design principles. Ms. Jinchi said we need to recap the concept of design principles in our own words because we recommend to understand them well. The design research in UNSDG is the good practice for explain the construction of work from artistic view. I chose a series of work and I explained how they were well-sophisticated but it was not allowed to the instruction: You need to explain why you choose that work for your goal. Writing a lot for explanation is easy, but we need to minimize our words for become more well-simplification. On the other hand, we need to be responsible for information that we get by ourself.
