INSTRUCTIONS

Fig 1.1 Instructions for this module

Requirements
Utilising the data collected from the research trip, students are to produce visual design outcomes that reflect their interpretation and definition of “Framing”, bearing in mind to consider cultural and aesthetic aspects, balanced with their design knowledge. Various directions and approaches can be engaged in, such as experimental design/art with the use of manual/digital or combination of both media.

Submission
This depends on the proposed medium.

Learning Goals
1. To express critical thoughts in visual form
2. To translate ideas into design output
3. To identify suitable media and design approaches

RESEARCH AND SUBMISSION

WEEK6

From group supervisor’s advice in week5, we switched our main motif for our own cultures to combine with Tiki culture. So I made my sketch based on my project1 idea, and add one more Balinese motif in it.

Fig 2.1 Idea sketch, Week6 (11/3/2024)

In my Project1 sketch, I combined Ainu, Dravidian, Malagasy, and Balinese culture as a mask, and I want to follow the base of this idea.

Fig 2.2 Reference from Balinese restaurant, Week6 (11/3/2024)

The flora ornament on the door is attracted me, so I replace the original flower with Bali’s signature flower, frangipani. Basically frangipani has five petals and its shape similar with star.

Fig 2.3 Measurement of length, Week6 (11/3/2024)

I measure rough numbers to understand the ratio of individual parts.

I’ve focusing on combine all cultures that my team members researched in one design. I want to find some points to improvement through make it with clay.

PRE MATERIAL RESEARCH

Fig 2.5 Air Hardening Modeling Clay

Fig 2.6,7 Acrylic paintings

I chose air dry clay for the first try. I don’t have any oven for bake clay, and it is more stable and fast. Also I chose acrylic painting for this pre-research because it has good color and one its dried, it is hard to fade.

Group idea:

Recognizing different backgrounds and perspectives is critical to promoting inclusion and breaking down barriers. Our ideas include aspects of our culture that we appreciate and we will incorporate into the Tiki culuture given that the majority of the group is descended from Austronesian people. We aim to integrate our culture and individuality into a corporate design that respectfully embraces diversity and challenges our design skills.

Fig 2.9 Material Research Final, Week6 (14/3/2024)

I found the bottom part in original idea is hard to materialize because I didn’t use base material for this Tiki mug, so I need to make it all by clay. If I need stable in it, I need to use a lot of clay. So I changed the bottom form into square. This air dry clay is really fast to dry, so there is no time for carving. I’ve adding the water for clay and carve patterns.

Fig 2.10 Clay for the final outcome

From individual material research, we find this clay is the most suitable for the final outcome. It has good coloring texture, light material, cheap cost.

WEEK7

Fig 3.1 Group Data Collection

After data collection along with the very first prototype design step finished, we are moving to creating the final design of Tiki Cup as a representative of our cultures.

Fig 3.3 Final Tiki Cup design Vote

From this design, we try to combined by making the sketches first, and after that we doing voting for which one is the best final design to be used as a final Tiki Cup product. After the voting, it seems number 3 is the best design choice to used as a Final Tiki Cup design.

Finaly, Our cross-cultural tikki cup is finished. After that we apply our research that we gather alogn with this final product to the ppt and make a bvideo presentation.

REFLECTIONS

As a result, we can corporate as group and checking our progress daily. Each members try their best until the very very final, and we could make our project. I’ve satisfied with the final outcome and we can do our research fully. The main theme, Tiki culture is really attractive and the background having many roots for dig. I was really had fun in the research part and got many knowledge about them. Also I got precious experience in group work. I didn’t imagine there is a people who reject talking with each other and stuck in their idea. I tried to talk with her and told her the progress after she left our group, but she rejected all. I’ve thinking about what should I do for her, and decide “Time is a great hearer”, but she couldn’t go back to our group. I learned how to react to the incident in group work, and ideally I will use these experience in next group work.
