INSTRUCTIONS

Requirements
The students are required to collect visual, oral, textual and tactile artifacts that would be part of their research materials for the ideation in Project 1 (proposal). All collected artifacts and materials must be recorded, kept and documented, accompanied by necessary information such as the type of artifact and material, its purpose, its symbolism, its cultural/historical background, and more, depending on the kind of artifact and material.
Data Collection Methods
Some of the methods by which you can collect data:
• Observation study.
• Interview of relevant stakeholders (from the lecture series, you may approach any of the guest speakers for an interview, if you deem their presentation useful for further research).
• Online and/or actual physical material* visual research of the selected culture (the
people/arts/symbols/architecture/text/calligraphy etc.)
Submission
1 In relevant ways that protect and preserve the collected artefacts and materials
2 Accompanying descriptions that properly and clearly informs about important information of each artifact and materials
Learning Goals
1 To engage in real world experience
2 To apply research skills
3 To explore another culture
4 To document findings in appropriate ways
RESEARCHES
From our Week1 research, we decided to focus on “Tiki cup”. It is related to a lot of cultures, and our group start research from Balinese. From group discussion, I have interested in the native culture of Malaysia. I also research their wood curving techniques as pre-research for final outcome.
WEEK4-5
Fig 2.1 Pre-research document, PDF, (3/3/2024)
Before I move on Tiki culture, I did pre-research for get basic information about “wood carving skill in native culture” and the motif of Tiki mug which can be related to Balinese culture.
I attracted by Pengosekan Style, which is the art style from Pengosekan village, Bali. However I study this style more deeply, I realized this is completely for the painting and not for the statues. This is because the main motif of Pengosekan Style are Birds and Flora, but there is no special meaning in there and its visual is difficult to recognize that it is from Balinese culture.
I also done some research for existing Tiki mugs which the main motif is birds. I try develop some design, but it is hard to make clear visual for viewers to recognize this is from Balinese culture. It is because the motif is not so special and if I use specific species of bird and flora in Bali, the viewers need knowledge for that motif to distinguish from others.
Fig 2.4 Field work in Orang Asli Museum, Week4 (3/3/2024)
I visited Muzium Orang Asli (Orang Asli Museum) for get visual references. There are some artifacts, clothes, and hand-carving figure and mask made of wood. I focused on the hand-carving figure and mask to get technique for cubic creation.
Fig 2.5 Wood Carving Works in Orang Asli Museum, Week4 (3/3/2024)
According to this explanation, the Jah Hut and Mah Meri tribes are often connect their carvings with elements of land, earth, ocean, rainbow, wind and thunder. Also, in the mythical world, the figures and masks are carved in various design and function as represent their visual of ancestors.
Also we can see the process of carving in second page. They use “Palas” leaves for polishing the carving in both figure and mask process.
Fig 2.6,7 Visual reference of Wayang Kulit
From my pre-research in Week4, I realized the pengosekan style is not suit for Tiki culture because the main motif has no special meaning and its visual is difficult to recognize that it is from Balinese culture. So I focus on the Balinese traditional shadow puppetry, “Wayang Kulit”. The shadow artist manipulates the carved leather figures between the lamp and the screen. It brings shadow in life.

Fig 2.8 Idea sketch with wayang kulit, Week5 (4/3/2024)
I made idea sketch based on wayang kulit. The difficult part in this design is the tiki mug is third-dimensional creation, but the wayang is basically second-dimensional creation. Also, the beautiful decoration in their body is really hard to make shape in real molding. I need to make it simple, but still need to left recognizable elements.

Fig 2.12 Tiki Power point by Clara Bernadette Lepathy, PDF, Week5
Our group leader changed our topic from Balinese and we need to change our direction suddenly. We going back to our culture research and combine them with Tiki mug.
Fig 2.13 Rainbow Tiki cup reference
We are going to design Tiki Cup using rainbow colour but it doesn't mean we forget to put our original cup colour base of our culture to represent it. In context, we choose from rainbow colors to use it for our tiki cup prototype.
Fig 3.1 Visual reference from Balinese restaurant, Week6 (11/3/2024)
From Week5 feedback, I went to get visual reference from Balinese restaurant in my near place. In Week4 and Week5 research, we thought there is no museum or gallery of Balinese. However, our supervisor advised that we’re no need to get references from museum or something, just find a shop that the main motif is Balinese. I found there are interesting ornament and furniture with unique carving or shapes. Some ornament has flora in its decorations, and I want to use it in my sketch.
TIKI CULTURE
Fig 4.1 Research note of Tiki culture
I made a research note of Tiki culture. The main roots of Tiki, Polynesian culture and the escapism called Tiki craze is also the key point in this research.
Also these link below are the video references which has the process of making Tiki mug.

My opinion from this research:
The Tiki boom in 1950s to 1960s is one of the things I never learned before in this research. Tiki craze was the way of escape from the reality of war era, and I emphasize with that feeling. According to one study said people want radical, violence entertainment in peaceful world, and if people want calm, comfort entertainment, there is something big problem happened in society such as war, recession, and disaster. The tropical product and fashion made people’s emotional leeway and it is similar to the vacation. I also loving with tropical stuff such as Aloha shirts, and I think that is the resurgence of boom.
FEEDBACK
Week5 (8/3/2024)
The theme is interesting, and you should think about the problem of Tiki. Then, make a solution for that problem using the “culture diversity”. If you can’t find any museum of Balinese, the balinese restaurant is fine for get reference.
Week6 (15/3/2024)
There is no more time for interview or something, so you need to do some case study of Tiki culture as a data collection. For example, the video reference, historical reference, and so on.
REFLECTIONS
Our main topic is Tiki culture, but the motif culture is changed while our research, so suddenly we need to change our direction for focus on our own culture. I got reference from Balinese and Orang Asli, but it is little bit sad because we change our direction so fast. Also, I had bad communication with my team members who delete other’s slide include mine without notice. I learned from this, when I want to change someone’s work, I will definitely contact with team members to avoid misunderstanding and bad communication. “Research individually and combine all of them later” is good idea, but it is not working all time. In this case, we need to decide one strong theme and research about that is the better way to work together. Sometimes developing idea with other team member wasn’t done in our work, and turns into individual work. I want to talk about the develop our idea with my team members in project3.
The field research in Orang Asli Museum and Balinese restaurant is interesting and I learned a lot from them. The native culture is sometimes have similarities, and I found them in the curving technique and architecture. They are deeply related to myth, and sometimes their ancestors. They believe the power of god and people, and pray for it through the artistic activities.
