Task3: Type Exploration/ Week8-13

WEEK8

Fig 2.1 Font Proposals, PDF, Week8 (13/6/2024)

Before starting this task3, we are setting our proposal for our fonts. I chose one theme from three plans. As a Japanese, I feel my language is little bit hard to learn because the shape is unique and there are no relationship between latin. So. I set the problem statement in this point and try to merge their characteristics.

WEEK9

Fig 2.2 Rough sketches, Week9 (19/6/2024)

I made some rough sketches before starting digitize them. I try to find the similar shapes in latin with Katakana and also try to relate the sound with it. For example, “A” in Japanese Katakana is “ア”. So I merge its shape in latin A.

Fig 2.3 Digitized Fonts (Uppercase only), Week9 (19/6/2024)

I digitized my fonts based on my rough sketches. I noticed there are still inconsistency in their visuals, but I priolitize the visuals instead of the consistency.

WEEK10

Fig 2.4 Fixed fonts, Week10 (23/6/2024)

From week10 feedback, I need to remake the visuals from beginning because there are too many inconsistency and it can’t be noticed as a Katakana. Mr. Vinod also said I need to start from basic shape and later add some characteristics in it. So I made a basic shapes with Katakana characteristics.

WEEK11

Fig 2.5 Katakana table for example

From week11 feedback, my fonts still having inconsistency in its visual and Mr. Vinod suggested that I need to refer the original shape of Katakana. Starting from vertical line, and move on to horizontal and cross line.

Fig 2.6 Font processing, Week11 (3/7/2024)

To make sure how did I changing my fonts, I left some process in working screen. They helped me a lot when I want to use previous shapes.

Fig 2.7 Uppercase lowercase numerals, Week11 (7/7/2024)

I made a whole fonts without punctuations at this point. I referred some existing fonts to adjust the balance of fonts. There are curve point (example: letter S, D) and square point (example: letter B, O), but I considered it can be acceptable difference in one font family.

Fig 2.8 Explanation for some parts, Week11 (7/7/2024)

The points where I put red circle were curved in latin. I made them more smooth to show they were originally curved. The points where I put blue square were straight in latin. So I wasn’t made them smooth because they were originally corner points.

Fig 2.9 Right: Japanese period Left: Japanese comma

I made the lowercase i and j tittles into lined circle because Japanese punctuation have this lined circle as a period. For further punctuations, I set their tittles to this shape.

Week12

Fig 2.10, 11 Feedback from Mr. Vinod in online class, Week12 (8/7/2024)

This Monday is a public holiday and Mr. Vinod open a short session for people wants further feedback. He suggested me some problems in my fonts, but especially he mentioned the inconsistency in straight and diagonal lines. They broke the consistency in whole appearance and I need to fix them immediately.

Fig 2.12 Week12 Progress, Week12 (10/7/2024)

After adjusting all fonts, I noticed I forgot some punctuations. So I added some of them after this.

Fig 2.13 Added punctuations screengrab, Week12 (12/7/2024)

I added extra punctuations into my fonts. I use existing fonts to make proper size of punctuations. For example, put uppercase M beside of the specific punctuations and measure the size balance.

Fig 2.14 Fixed fonts in FontForge, Week12 (14/7/2024)

After fixing all fonts and made punctuations, I imported them into FontForge because I couldn’t find the FontLab7 in MacLab.

Fig 2.15 Reference site for FontForge, Week12 (14/7/2024)

I am used to the FontLab, so it is the first time to use FontForge. First I was really really struggled in downloading, because this app was not supported and my Mac trying to refuse it. I need to change some settings and accept it by myself. Second, the UI makes me confusing a lot. I’m not good at find the functions and I was lost in here for long time. Third, importing the fonts were heavy works. I didn’t divide the art boards in Illustrator, so I need to work from here. FontForge will not import fonts without guidelines, so make sure the art board having guid lines in it.

I referred this site for settings: DESIGN WITH FONTFORGE

WEEK13

Fig 2.16 Kerning in FontForge, Week13 (15/7/2024)

I was also struggled with kerning because the numbers I set numbers in the left and right bearing, and they were automatically changed into random numbers. I really don’t know the reasons, but finally I could kern the whole font family.

I referred this video to do kerning: https://youtu.be/0Nu2dEdUNNk?feature=shared

Task3: Font Application/ Week13

Fig 2.18 Start font presentation, Week13 (17/7/2024)

I spent a lot of my time in FontForge and I couldn’t make it by my own class, so I bring my process in Wednesday’s class and got feedback from Mr. Vinod. I want to make some brushy or ink texture with paper texture because the original shape in Katakana are came from brush strokes. He agreed with this directions, so I could proceed it with confidence for myself.
I made a colour palette to adjust the whole visuals in font presentation. Also I tried brushy textures in various shapes to find the most interesting shapes.

Fig 2.19 Example of “Genkou youshi”, Week13 (17/7/2024)

“Genkou youshi” is the Japanese word that means the writing paper with grids. We use one character including punctuations in one grid and write some sentences. Sometimes it is use for write a novel. I want to use this motif for my font presentation because it is most suit for showing each characters in proper distance and sizes.

Fig 2.20 Consideration in between several choices, Week13 (17/7/2024)

We need to make 5 font presentations and I want to show the most favourite letter in whole font family. To make brushy/ink texture in fonts, I use blur and see how it looks like in distance. Think again and again, I choose the one with numerals because it has more impact in its visual and I feel the balance of using screen is better than the others.

Fig 2.21 Font mockups, Week13 (19/7/2024)

In font mockups, I want to relate my font with products with paper. So basically try to use product like a books and also try to use my font as a visual poster. The colours were used in previous font presentation because I want to make consistency. I use Unblast.com as the main searching site as I used it in Task2.

Fig 2.22 Font Presentation and Font Application, Week13 (20/7/2024)

The theme for these presentations and applications are “brushy and inky textures” and for the further theme is related to papers, books, and posters. I think I could make sense of unity in whole artworks. The colour palette have five colours and it also adding the consistency in whole visuals.

FEEDBACK

Week8 (12/6/2024)
Specific Feedback... If you want to use existing letterform from Japanese, you can make it as an uppercase. You should reach bilingual design in this task. Also you can try blush characteristic in its fonts, but not necessarily. Past students were tried to do same things, so you should search more about the references.

General Feedback... You should have multi option for choose one from all ideas. There is no choice if you have one option.  The lack of confidence or time, you can
If there's no reason for the purpose, we can't find why it's existing. If there's only uppercase appear in typeface, that's not means there's no lowercase.

Week9 (17/6/2024)
Specific Feedback... For the plan2 (Hylian script), if that fonts not already use as a latin forms, you can use it as a main theme.

General Feedback... Do not explain the figure in your e-portfolio is considered as lose marks. Please check it even if you get good from lecturer. If you choose abstract theme like music, you should show how it is visualised by others. If you choose existing fonts for expansion, you need to think the problem in it more deeply. If you want to make bilingual typeface, you need to see the past student’s work and not to copy or do similar work with them. Subtitles should be simple form.

Week10 (24/6/2024)
Specific Feedback... Your main two problems are not decide the direction and inconsistency in whole strokes. The stroke thickness is too different. Forget about the characteristic you want add and start from basic shapes, then slowly developing them. Keep the characteristics minimum and try to focus on one direction of design.

General Feedback... When you do font presentation, you should use other font as an explanation or headline. The general rules in making fonts: make consistency in your typeface, set same thickness, and You should create uppercase letters and lowercase letters because they need consistency. Manage the hight while making big one and small one. You need evidence for your work progress.

Week11 (1/7/2024)
Specific Feedback... Your typeface still having inconsistency in its visual. You can see the shape of original font:Katakana. Pay attention to the some parts in specific letters. For example, always the lower line in letter K is longer than the upper line. When you make letter S, look at the curves instead of middle shape. The upper curve is little bit shorter than the lower curve. If you want to extend the shape, use Cmd+Y.

General Feedback... If you want to move fonts from Illustrator to FontLab, make sure every elements were combined, the counter space was valid, and do NOT make it round in FontLab, just keep its position.

Week12 (8/7/2024)
Specific Feedback... Your lowercase i and j has strange form. The lowercase w needs to be more space and it is more lower. The baseline needs to be more higher, but current height is acceptable. If you placed each fonts, there's a strange counter-spaces. You need to manage your characteristics in your fonts. The lines angle is not consistent, so it looks so messy.

General Feedback... Make artworks about 5 or something for the final font presentation. It will be the square. You should not focus on the visuals, the main one is fonts. Make sure to make guideline when you make font presentations. You need to manage the counter-space in the screen. Set colour palette before making them. Counter space is minimum 5pt. You should show your issue and your solution in the presentation.

Week13 (15/7/2024, 17/7/2024)
Specific Feedback... This direction is fine. The visual elements not prevents the main font,  so keep it up with this direction. Play with the shape(font) is also allowed. Fontforge is not necessarily to be completed. If there’s some kerning mistake, don’t mind, adjust them in illustrator by hand.

General Feedback... The deadline is set in next class. Please submit your task3 by 21st July.

Week14 (22/7/2024)
Specific Feedback... The type application was good. If the ttf file in google drive was not showing, it is okay as long as people can download the fonts from there.

REFLECTIONS

Experience... From semester1 activities, I was little bit worried about my skills for creating fonts. I’m the person that not good at setting strict rules, so my fonts easy to get inconsistency. I think it is because I prioritisze the visual instead of rules, so my first few attempts were broken. As a result, I could make the rule in my fonts and add some characteristics of Katakana in them. However, the process are taking a lot of time and I feel my time management is not going well. Also I spent a lot of times with FontForge. It is completely new application for me and I couldn’t used to it.
In the font presentations, I could try more dynamic visuals compared to the past fonts. I set the theme to brushy/ink texture and I could make strict and consistent visuals. I am really satisfied with the results.

Observations... To make my font presentations, I checked seniors works and professional work for my references. The exhibition poster is the most interesting and helpful for learning. For example, the management of objects and screen size, the hierarchy of the informations, and the textures. I tried to make exhibition poster in my mockup, but it is little bit messy and not working well. I choose B&W for focusing the balance of screen, but I made a mistake in textures. I need to study more in the textures.

Findings... I learned that my time management is not strict and wasting a lot of time. So I found the new way for time managing. First set the 25mins timer and focus on the works, and after finish 25mins timer, start 5mins timer to rest. After 5mins rest end, start the 25mins work. It works really good for me and my last few weeks were helped by it.
