EXERCISES
In this exercise, students tasked to do listed work to achieve further skill in environment design.
- Perspective drawings
- Composition
- Value painting
- Ambience
- Color management
- Vignette set design
- Photo bashing
Fig 2.1-2 World setting sketches, Week3 (6/5/2025)
I choose "Fossil fighters" as my main theme and explore the world starting from desert area. The reason why I choose desert as main area is because I want to make rural village for human that has characteristic of dinosaurs.
Fig 2.3-4 Building design and map, Week5 (20/5/2025)
After decided map, I made thumbnail sketches of landscape. From lecturer's advice, these sketches are too far. I made more close-up design after this.
Fig 2.5-6 Tent design progress, Week6 (27/5/2025)
I try to focus on the tent itself from the sketches. Fig 2.8 is too modern for the timeline, so I start progressing with Fig 2.9.
Fig 2.7-8 Tent design progress, Week6 (29/6/2025)
The base of tent design is decided at here. I want to make feel of unique ethnicity. I mainly referred Egyptian and Turkey culture to get knowledge of carpet pattern design and tent design.
Fig 2.9-10 Market place sketches, Week6 (27/5/2025)
Fig 2.11-12 Market place sketches, Week6 (27/5/2025)
These are the market place that I trying to make as an asset. I put characters to measure and see how the environment works in the world.
Fig 2.13 Market place sketches coloured, Week6 (28/5/2025)
I roughly put colours to the sketches. I didn't decide main colour at this point, so it looks so random in terms of colour balance.
Fig 2.15 Thumbnail sketches with perspective, Week8 (10/6/2025)
I made three thumbnail sketches from various angle in same environment. Lecturer's advice for my value painting is "you don't have much gradation for colours, so make them more darker and add more shadows on it." I am not satisfied with my value sketches, however, this is the main reason that I feel my value looks flat.

Fig 2.16 Colour study, Week8 (10/6/2025)
I was thinking to use warm colours, however, lecturer advised that will be not work because the environment already have warm colours. I set main tent colour as slightly white and add stand out colour (green, red, purple).
Fig 2.17 Ambient study, Week8 (14/6/2025)
For ambient study, I tried warm, cold, and increase saturation.

PROJECT1
In this Project, students should develop locations based on the theme they previously chose.
- Mood board – collection of references and breakdown
- Thumbnail sketches – initial concept ideas
- Composition studies – 5 drawings, best communicate visually
- Value studies – Continue from 5 compositions
- Ambience studies – Continue from 5 value painting
Fig 3.1-2 Tent design progress, Week8 (11/6/2025)
From ideation process in exercise, I decided main asset as store in the market place. This world has mine to excavate fossils, and this store sells lantern for people.
Fig 3.3-5 Tent design progress, Week8 (15/6/2025)
From lecturer's advice, I added some stuff to make the world setting more solid and unique. NPC for this store is a craftsman, and repairs lantern in here.
Fig 3.6 Material and Function callouts, Week10 (27/6/2025)
I roughly divide functions of this tent. The ground is sand, so I put some carpet on it.
Fig 3.7 Final tent design, Week10 (27/6/2025)
I could make unique design for my main theme, "rural village in desert". I wish if I could add more characteristic of dinosaur in details, however, overall outcome is satisfied me.
Fig 3.8 Project1: Exterior and Landscape Design, Week10 (27/6/2025)
PROJECT2
In this project, students required to develop previous design further more and focus on the interiors of the building.
- Mood board – collection of references and breakdown
- Thumbnail sketches – initial concept ideas
- Composition studies – 5 drawings, best communicate visually
- Value studies – Continue from 5 compositions
- Ambience studies – Continue from 5 value painting
Fig 4.1 Rough sketch for Interior design, Week9 (17/6/2025)
From Project1 exterior design, I proceed interior design. The problem is This single tent has no more rooms and I'm struggle with how can I design it. I am wondering how can I put kitchen inside because it is hard to use fire in the construction made by wood and canvas. Lecturer's suggested me to add kitchen in outside.
Fig 4.2-3 Interior design sketches, Week10 (24/6/2025)
I add storage in underground to use space effectively. First I made the storage size big, however, it is little bit hard to make L shape as I show in fig 4.3. I changed the size later stage to make it more easy to use.
Fig 4.4 Coloured interior design, Week10 (24/6/2025)
The ground is sand and put carpets directly on it. When I referring real images, Egyptian tent put carpet directly on the ground and I follow that to make my design more suits for desert culture.
Fig 4.5 Add outside kitchen, Week11 (1/7/2025)
After got some advice from lecturer, I added outside kitchen side to tent. Add lantern in tent to control brightness of room.
Fig 4.6 Interior function progress, Week11 (1/7/2025)
I put folding ladder for take stuff on the ceiling storage. However, compare to other stuff design, it looks too modern and it will break the consistence of whole design. Change underground storage smaller than the past design because it is for one person to live and it no need to be so big.
Fig 4.7-8 Coloured interior design progress, Week12 (8/7/2025)
From my lecturer's advice, I add more interior stuff to make more lived-in feel. I designed this tent for one person who likes to go adventure. I added map on the wall in the back, and put pickaxe right side of oil can.
Fig 4.9 Interior design function final version, Week12 (8/7/2025)
From Fig 4.6, I changed foldable ladder design from metal to rope to make whole design consist.
Fig 4.10 Final outcome of interior design, Week12 (11/7/2025)
I always use black for the shadow, however, lecturer suggested to add other colour to make ambient in design. I added and adjusted colour of shadow. It makes more lived-in feel.

FINAL PROJECT
In this project, students tasked to make effective design bible with compiling past projects and works.
- (Individual Call Sheet) Polished Artwork: 2000 x 3500 pixels 200 dpi for Interior, Exterior and Props design (Jpeg and psd)
- Complete Environment Design Bible pdf format.

FEEDBACK
Week1 (23/4/2025)
General Feedback: ZBrush is for detailed model, and Blender is for props.
Week2 (30/4/2025)
General Feedback: Start from exterior design and later you can do interior. You should make main hero asset first.
Week3 (7/5/2025)
Specific Feedback: Place the main object first, and focusing about how to lead viewers to the main objects. Sub objects are placed to the leading line.
Week4 (14/5/2025)
Specific Feedback: Make focus building and build composition from it. Your design for the statue is still weak. You should study more for tent design.
Week5 (21/5/2025)
General Feedback: Take basic shape of your reference picture. Then think about extract textures. Starting from 10~20% grey and draw a value. Whole canvas>light area>shadow area. You should study textures from photo bashing.
Specific Feedback: Draw from closer look. The whole design looks flat. Composition from far can be more rough. The focus point should more close view.
Week6 (28/5/2025)
Specific Feedback: Your PPT looks so uncomfortable. Place one image per one slide. You can make various type of tent design, however, you should focus one design for final.
Week7 (4/6/2025)
General Feedback: Divide repetitive piece assets and hero assets clearly. Hero props means the asset which is stand alone.
Specific Feedback: You shouldn't paste texture directly. The cloth pulled from both side going to stretch and if there is no pillar for the center part, it will go down time by time.
Week8 (11/6/2025)
Specific Feedback: You should see the reference more to get realistic texture. Make more unique points. The rope is too thin and it cant' be seen. Draw the interior of your tent.
Week9 (18/6/2025)
Specific Feedback: Make your 3D bigger horizontally. Make some new room for tent like a underground room. Take off the wall of front because it will hide the interior. Separate entrance.
Week10 (25/6/2025)
General Feedback: Final outcome should be PDF and individual jpg. If you doing value paint in big canvas, it will be overwhelming. Make 3D for interior or exterior.
Specific Feedback: Make your value design more darker. The shadows are not properly set and it feels floating. Add more stuff like a room light and make your design more living-feel. Make sure you should explain the house mechanism clearly.
Week11 (2/7/2025)
Specific Feedback: Foldable ladder is too modern for the world setting. Add more shadows on the interiors.
Week12 (9/7/2025)
General Feedback: If your design is too squarish, you can make some difference in level to break the rhythm.
Specific Feedback: Add soft light to adjust the ambience. If you want to do 3D for interior, think about what can be duplicatable.
REFLECTIONS
In this whole semester, I was sharing the same concept for Game Design with this module. I could overcome the fear for the environment design. I really not good at perspective and it makes overwhelmed when I try to draw landscape. However, this module gives me confidence for drawing with perspectives. For the interiors, I don't have much knowledge about them because usually I'm not focusing their design. But the reference lecturer showed to us is having living-feel in it. I strongly feel we need to make a work that can be tell the story with its visual. "Who is living in here?" "How they living here?" If viewers got interest for the artwork, they will think like this and the power of storytelling is become attractive point of artwork.
I will work in the Major Project in future, and I could get really good experience before start that module.
