INSTRUCTIONS

Fig 2.1 Instruction for this task, PDF (page7)

1. Recap Task 2 brief
2. Write a 300- to 350-word visual analysis of the selected design
(refer to Visual Analysis lecture notes and guide).
3. Include reference links where applicable.

WORK PROGRESS: Discuss and show your progress to your lecturer
during class.

LEARNING GOALS:

1. To identify, describe and analyze the design principles in the work of others.
2. To demonstrate an awareness of one’s surroundings, using design as a solution to communicate visually.

VISUAL ANALYSIS

I chose UNSDG number 14 “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine rehouses for sustainable development” in Task1 and found design principles below: Gestalt theory, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Balance, Word and Image. In Task2, we required to investigate and develop our analysis skills of existing art/design work. We need to analyze the work more deeper than Task1.

Fig 3.1 The poster made by ne2pi

Stock illustration ID: 1190185430
Description by creator:
Stop plastic pollution. Eco concept vector illustration. Ecology poster set with garbage and ocean life.

Phase1: Observation

These three posters are a series of art. The main objects are placed at centre in each poster. They were combined with trash and have unique shapes. The left one is the octopus legs combined with plastic cup, the middle one is the fish combined with plastic straw and the right one is the big fish fin combined with top of the plastic bottle. Main colors are blue and only trash shape has dull pink, making it more attractive in this work. In overall appearance, they finishing off like ink stains. The waves filled the half bottom of the screen. The waves connected at both edges. From left to right, the slogan is placed at upper left, centre and right. (120 words)

Phase2: Analysis

All posters have consistency in their overall visuals and it made viewers comfortable when we see them all at once because they following Gestalt theory of continuity. The waves placed at both edges smoothly connect one screen to the other. They made a sense of balance in three images. Each object placed at the center, but direction is a little bit different. The left one and the right one is arranged diagonally face to each other. The middle one is upright but the plastic straw is diagonal. This device naturally leads viewer’s attention to the center. It creates a sense of unity and movement.
We can see the dull pink in trash part. It makes a contrast with other parts, especially the fish color. Also, we can find the emphasis in this part. We saw the characteristic fish shape combined with trash, and they were lined up side by side. It will lead the viewer’s attention. We can easily understand what the creator wants to say throughout this work: the trash in the seas may kill existing fish and the environment. It is thoughtfully linked to the words that are placed above the images. (194 words)

Phase3: Interpretation

Fig 3.2,3 G20 group photo and “G 20 on Marine Plastic” by Paresh Nath

These posters made by the creator who active on internet in November 2019. According to his descriptions, this work is made for call attention to people to stop ocean pollution caused by plastic garbage. In 2019, “The Osaka Blue Vision”, which aims to reduce additional marine plastic waste to zero by 2025, was shared at G20 Osaka Summit in June 2019. It is not clear if the two facts were directly connected, however, that year was the trigger for many people to aware the danger of ocean pollution. FEEDBACK

Week3 (21/2/2024)
General Feedback... You need to explain bit more about design principles that you found in task1. Suggest directions like “at bottom part... above that point..” because it will make more understandable for your description. You need to place the same image as Task1 in this Task2.

Specific Feedback... According to the Visual Analysis PDF, you should separate your sentences for three phase. It is because if you don’t separate your descriptions, it is little bit mess for readers, and also for writer.

Week4 (28/2/2024)
Specific Feedback... You have some grammar problem in your sentences. Frequently use “they” in the explanation but it is not clear what you are talking about. You need to describe in detail because you often use unclear expression. The way you connected the time with that work is interesting. You can learn not only how to write references in proper way, but also the grammar guideline in American Psychological Association (APA) Style.

REFLECTIONS

Identify, describe, and analysis the design principles in others work is one of the progress of this task 2. I try to focus on the creator’s thought when I saw any kinds of works in daily life, but “see others work from view of design principles” is the more higher level of investigation. I could verbalize why I felt comfort from the work using more certain theory and it is similar to that we can find golden ratio in popular pictures.
In my research, the G20 held at Osaka in 2019 decided the plan for reduce marine litters by 2050. It is really interesting because my subject work is also made in 2019. In that year, the government shows the number of plastic waste and that is about 353 million. This is quite huge numbers and they make awareness for us about the danger of sea pollution. I’m not sure if it is related to creators, but it may works as trigger to stimulate their creativity of making works for raise up marine pollution issues.
