LECTURES
Past lectures are in Task1.
Week5 (6/3/2024)
In this class, Ms.Jinchi describes how seniors made their work in the past and how we should develop our design. The design working screen shot is not considered as the design progress because it is just a structure development. Show the idea development in our blog.
INSTRUCTIONS
Fig1.1 Instructions for this task, PDF (page8-9)
1. a recap of Task 3 brief
2. some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own ideas
3. 3-5 sketches (manual/digital) of your own ideas
4. final design in A4 size, JPEG
5. a rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/defending the decisions made in your design, the meaning/purpose of the design and the design principles that are found in the design.
6. feedback from the lecturer
WORK PROGRESS: Discuss and show your progress to your lecturer during class.
LEARNING GOALS:
1. To apply and communicate the knowledge and understanding of
design principles through a work of design with a purpose.
2. To organise and synthesise written and visual outputs into a final blog.
DESIGN PROGRESS
In this task, I required to make work of design which inspired/ influenced by a work that I chose in Task1 and Task2. Also I need to apply my knowledge of design principles. To convey my thought in creation, any medium or materials and direct use of photographs are recommended. Any plagiarized found in our works, it considered as subjected to the policies of University concerning academic misconduct.
WEEK5
This is the simple figure for decomposition the original design which I chose in Task1 and Task2. They juxtaposed at one line with same size of screen.
Fig 2.2,3 First Idea sketches, Week5 (4/3/2024)
My visual goal in this task is “Use the screen effectively” because the original design is a series of work which has same theme in each screen. They have three screens but it is not out of balance. I need to learn from this point.
Fig 2.4,5 Second Idea sketch and visual attempt, Week5 (8/3/2024)
This idea was came from the original work, which fish combined with plastic trash. I want to show the cross-section of fish, so I use transparent plastic bottle. I made 2D and 3D fish to find more appropriate expression.
Fig 2.6 Extra visual sketch, Week5 (8/3/2024)
I try to find appropriate visual and expression for this work. Fish rubbing is looks like decayed because of its ink blur and fade.
VISUAL REFERENCES/ WEEK5
Fig 2.7-9 Visual references of fish
I want to make clear visual for express the main idea: plastic trash in ocean may harm sea environment and creatures. Ms. Jinchi gave me an advice, try to find a visual that the fish actually killed by plastic trash and express it in my work. The right one is the fish ate 17 fragments of microplastic.

Fig 2.10,11 Work by Meret Oppenheim
From Week 5 feedback, Ms. Jinchi suggested some work made by Meret Oppenheim. She is a Swiss artist, painter and photographer who known as a female artist participated in Surrealism and Dada.
Surrealism:
Surrealism evolved from the Dadaism that emerged in Zurich, Switzerland, during World War I. Wonder, Surprising Parallels, and Absurdity are the hallmarks of surrealist works.
Dada (Dadaism):
Dada or Dadaism was a European avant-garde art movement of the early 20th century. Dadaism emerged as a reaction to the depression realities of the World War I era. It was primarily a movement that rejected traditional art (anti-art) and was politically anti-war.

WEEK6
Fig 3.1 Manual Visual attempt, Week6 (12/3/2024)
This task allowed manual and digital expression, so I want to use actual plastic for my work. First, I sketch the fish shape and decide the area for replace body parts. Then, I sketch the bone and covered with plastic. I also want to try a gimmick which able to touch like a pop-up book. The upper side of plastic which placed at dorsal fin is stick to other paper, so only this part is detachable. My point of concern is this part is raised up compare to others and less transparency.
I tried four type of plastic which have transparency. The right one near the tail fin has too mush wrinkles and reflect room lights, but it is appropriate for plastic expression. The left one near the face is bit harder than others, so it wasn’t reflect room lights but it’s not enough for plastic representation.
In next try, I need to pay attention for the room lights to take photo. Also I need to pay attention for the coloring, because I use only pencil for the sketch but it needs color in case.
Week6 (13/3/2024)
The one rise up from surface is working as make sense for viewers “it is able to touch” and “it is in my hand”, so this part is fine. However, Ms. Jinchi said “when I remove plastic segment from fish, there are still remaining bone. There is no relation with changing its form related to the action: remove the plastic”. It is the candid reaction of viewers, so I need to use the way which is detachable and removable plastic part.
Fig 3.2 Digital visual attempt sketch, Week6 (13/3/2024)
From Week5 sketch, I made more two visuals. I searched for the sea creature accidentally ate plastic trash in the ocean, and I interested in Whale shark and Antarctic krill. Whale shark has big mouth and when they eat other fish, they easily to get other one like plastic garbage. Antarctic krill has small body and from relatively recent research, the microplastic found in their body.
My concern in this design is too similar to the original one, so I think I need to avoid this idea.
From Week6 feedback,
・Add color in the living fish part, the bone part is B&W and add more detail
・Make short video for showing the detachable part
・Try many kinds of materials for searching proper texture and shape
these are the key point for final outcome.
Fig 3.3,4 Second manual attempt sketch, Week6 (16/3/2024)
In original work, the three screen in one work is really attractive and easily to get viewer’s attention. So I want to add two more creatures in one screen to make huge impact for viewers. I picked up humpback whale and green turtle for main motif because some research said these two species is also suffer from plastic pollution in the sea.
Fig 3.5 Finish Painting, Week6 (17/3/2024)
I use A2 paper and Acrylic paint for the final outcome. I separate one screen into three and draw main motif in the center of each screen. To make the motif more lively, I put shadow for the rainbow runner but I feel it is unnecessary for this work. The precise drawing in paint is going well. I unified their facing directions to make sense of unity.
Week7 (20/3/2024)
From Week7 feedback, Ms. Jinchi said adding shadows will defeat the purpose as illustration. I want to frontal, flat look and plastic and B&W pieces are added on top. So, without shadow is better.
VISUAL REFERENCES/ WEEK6
I found a photo of fish which ate microplastic in week5. The species of this fish is “Rainbow runner”, and I want to use it for my motif.

This work is cut off fish head and replace plastic bottle filled with trash as fish body. There is no release info from creator, so it is my interpretation, the plastic garbage is getting inside of the fish body and it turns into the garbage itself.
The same point with my idea is replace trash as fish body, and using transparent material for show the trash effectively. I want to take a photograph of this work, so the express method is also same. The difference is he using three-dimentional material which is fish, plastic bottle, and trash inside the bottle while I using drawing and fragment of plastic.
To draw sea creatures, I search proper photo for reference.

WEEK7
Fig 4.1 The examples of materials, Week7 (19/3/2024)
I collect some plastic stuff for the final expression. I want a transparency in these, so I also get color paper made of plastic.
Fig 4.2 First attempt with plastic stuff, Week7 (19/3/2024)
First I cut the plastic, and cut paper following the plastic shape. I want to make a gap with living part, so I made the bone part in B&W. The part with red and green plastic is for give oily/harmful impression to viewers, but it is too blight and the gap between creature and bone is become smaller. So I must avoid the strong color plastic in this work.
Week7 (20/3/2024)
The plastic part is too strong for this work, but if I would’t use them a lot for here is fine.
Fig 4.3 Plastic improvement, Week7 (22/3/2024)
From Week7 feedback, I found some key points for improve the whole quality of design.
・Replace plastic part for more appropriate form
・Try more strong pen for make clear visual
・Remove shadow from fish part
I try to cover the bone part and blank part, and decide which one is more suit for the screen. Also I try to make one with bold black marker and see how it works in screen. As a result, cover the bone part was overwhelmed details in bone, and cover the blank part is fine. Bold black marker in blank part is too strong and loose colored plastic visual and color. However, bold black marker in bone part is little bit strong for details. I decided to cover the blank part with colored plastic, but add some strong stroke with thin marker for emphasis the bone part.

“Swim away, Plastic Skeletons”
The main idea in this work is “plastic pollution in ocean kill the sea creatures”. To express this idea, I make living part and dead part of sea creatures in the screen. The dead part with plastic is having transparency and you can see their bone through the plastic part like a X-ray. Also you can take off the plastic part by your hand, and then the living part appears. It shows the plastic pollution is clearly harmful for sea creatures and we can take it from sea by our hand.
I tried to took perfect balance in whole screen. I use three main motif of sea creatures as a series of one work, and placed them in middle of screen and vertical line. This Alignment working as a harmony in the screen because different motif can be work together tidily. It is also considered as Gestalt theory by the overall visual which easily to see whole rather than individuals.
The sea creatures were painted by acrylic paintings, and I keep in my mind that these parts need “living” expression and realism in its visual compared to the “dead” expression in plastic parts. This is for make emphasis in screen and get viewers attract in plastic part. This is also work as contrast with living part and dead part. I placed plastic parts to cover the motif. The plastic parts have two layers. The bottom part is made by the paper, which same as the base paper of this work. It shows the bone of each creatures in black & white. The top part is made by several plastic with different texture, which mainly has transparency in its visual.
The plastic bottle on the whale has a cap and we can remove it by our hand, then we can make eye contact with whale. These idea of device were came from pop-up book, because they are include viewers action in their function. I want to pull viewers to my world, so I made this device that able to touch directly. “Touch” is literally have big meaning in our daily life, and I think see something and touch it directly better than see it on the screen when we want to understand it. These days, we can see a lot of design or poster related to protecting environment made by digital way. I want to show one design that made by manual and it is more easy to understand what is happening in this world. (413 words)
FEEDBACK
Week5 (6/3/2024)
General Feedback... The design working screen shot is not considered as the design progress because it is just a structure development. Show the idea development in your blog.
Specific Feedback... The sketches are interesting and the one with transparent expression is the most affective for viewers. The way for output is manual and digital either can be, but the manual way is more effective in certain situation when you want to express something. Meret Oppenheim, who made iconic works in 20s, will be one of your reference. Also the Lobster telephone made by Salvador Dali will be my reference. These works are sometimes considered as sarcasm because of its characteristic motif and shape. The original design was juxtaposition of three works.
Week6 (13/3/2024)
Specific Feedback... Trying four kinds of plastic texture is good, and the one stick to paper is most good one. It rise up little bit from surface compare to other one, but it make sense of “able to touch” and “in my own hand” for viewers. When touch and remove plastic from the fish but there is still bone, it is not make sense.
You can try another materials and expression like cut black plastic with shiny texture for oil shape. Also you should make short video for showing remove the plastic from the fish.
Coloring is up to you, but B&W is mostly using in the expression when it is need more detail, complicate and give serious impression. It is called technical drawing. Add color is more “living” expression than B&W. Also you can choose combination of both of them, but carefully think about what do you want to express in your work.
You should avoid the digital idea because you trying to make them related to original work in your style, but it is just 3D version of original one.
Week7 (20/3/2024)
General Feedback... Please follow the MIB of this module and read carefully for details. Talk about your work’s meaning in a rationale is fine, but the most important point is how design principles work in your work. When you post the sketches or finals in manual, just keep in your mind the figure needs clearly visible by third person. If you have three-dimensional object in your work, take photo from various angles. NOT submit jpeg image in google class. Just ignore the second part in MIB submission terms. Expand the deadline to end of Monday, 24/3/2024. If you want to ask any questions, the limit is 5pm in Friday.
Specific Feedback... You can use the tweezers for plastic because it is more easily to move. The colored plastic is overwhelmed when you cover the details by pencils, so you need to use only it or cut off for black space. If you want to try the colored plastic for bone, you must try the black marker for make the base color strong. When you took photo of the work, you need to take individual photo with/without plastic and whole screen with/without plastic. The expression for microplastic is not suited, so you can try some materials like vcd and aluminum foil. The idea of plastic bottle is interesting, but the cap of bottle turns into white is more suit for whole idea.
REFLECTIONS
First of all, I really enjoyed this work as learning. The step-by-step analyzation made me sense for “making attractive work”. When I developing my idea, I realized how the original one is really well-developed design.
I was tried to use manual way for this work because it is more familiar with me and more attractive way for express my thought. My inspiration is came from pop-up book, which I really loved in my childhood. “Touch” is one of the most important action for learning. If we didn’t touch hot pan in our life, we couldn’t understand how it is hot and we burned. The knowledge from digital is surely useful, but I want to challenge more strong expression related to direct action. I enjoyed so much for the plastic expressions, especially the plastic bottle part. We can take the plastic cap from there by our hand, and then the whale eye appears. It is directly shows the idea: we can take away plastic from sea environments by make eye contact with whale.
While I was focusing my design, Ms. Jinchi helped me actively. When I show her some choices to decide, she explain what is good and not good from designer view. This is really helpful for me because she never deny my original idea and think together for improve my work. I want to say biggest thanks for her.
